GreenSCOR as a Tool for Measurement and Improvement of the Carbon Footprint of the Logistics Functions of a Firm

The measurement of the environmental impact of the activities of companies is becoming more important than ever. The government of South Africa is planning to introduce carbon taxing from 2013, and is including this in its budget plan. This could make the determination of the carbon footprint of organisations not only socially important, but also a cost of doing business.

We present a model developed for Safcor Panalpina, one of the largest third party logistics services provider in South Africa, to be used for the measurement and identification of improvement opportunities inherent in the carbon footprint of logistics activities of their clients. This was done through the implementation of the GreenSCOR template of the Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) Model.

The model is then applied to the services rendered to a pharmaceutical company, XYZ, to identify the contribution of each of the principal logistics functions, which is then ranked and colour-coded to identify areas for most significant Green savings. The logistics activities are then normalised to SCOR level 3 processes to identify the appropriate best practices that could be used to drive such Green savings, and from which the return on investments could be estimated.
