A Mathematical Model To Minimize Total Tardiness And Workforce Overtime Costs In Cellular Manufacturing

The problem studied in this paper was observed in an actual textile company. In traditional scheduling problems, capacity remains unchanged and jobs are assigned to machines and start and completion times are determined. Contrary to the traditional approach in scheduling, in this paper, we make both overtime (capacity) and scheduling decisions simultaneously. Since having tardiness is not desirable, we allow overtime to minimize total tardiness. However, overtime also costs and therefore there is a need to balance overtime and tardiness costs. We present a mathematical model to solve this complex problem. An experimentation has been carried out using three different problem types with five instances each based on the data collected from the above mentioned textile company. The model allows different overtime options on different cells. We could solve problems up to 40 jobs and 2 cells per planning period. This was similar to what was experienced and handled on a weekly basis in the mentioned company. For most problems, the mathematical model gave results in seconds. As a result, this model can be used to make these decisions in industrial settings.
