Fatigue crack growth threshold of Selective Laser Melted Ti-6Al-4V

Abstract


Selective Laser Melting (SLM) of Ti-6Al-4V has gained interest in industry over recent years due to its ability to produce geometrically complex components for engineering applications. In order for important industries such as aerospace and biomedical to accept SLM Ti-6Al-4V for their applications, there needs to be a great understanding of the SLM technology. Previous work has shown that there’s in an intricate link between porosity, residual stress and microstructure which affects the mechanical properties of SLM Ti-6Al-4V. These intricacies have also shown to be dependent on specific SLM processes such as scan parameters and scan strategies, amongst others. The interest then lies in establishing this link, specifically focussing on fatigue threshold and crack initiation characteristics, in order to obtain a true understanding of the properties in relation to the specific SLM process.
