Abstract

Lean Manufacturing focuses on the efficient design of all relevant production processes. In the book The Machine That Changed the World, the Lean system is described as being centred on continuous improvement and zero-tolerance levels for all forms of waste in the manufacturing process. Little has been documented on the effect of Lean Systems on asset availability and performance. Even fewer has been documented on the development of Lean thinking for asset management activities. This paper investigates the impact that lean thinking has on the assets the manufacturing process utilises and how asset optimisation can be driven through Lean Asset Management. With Lean Asset Management focusing on the removal of waste from the value stream, dependency on the reliable performance of assets (people, tools and equipment) dramatically increases.
