Abstract

We discuss trends in international supply chains, including: changing infrastructures, changing freight transportation and logistics industry structures, sustainability, beyond-lean production systems, and reverse globalization.  We discuss the ever increasing role of real time supply chain control, based on real time data and give examples that include: the value of monitoring perishable freight during transport and the value of traffic congestion information during trips from origin to destination and during pickup and delivery.  We present two examples of current supply chain control challenges: blood product production and additive manufacturing.
