With Africa expected to be one of the world's fastest-growing regions, South Africa has positioned itself as the gateway to the continent. Though its economy is dwarfed by others members of the BRICS group, South African companies have shown capability of competing in the global arena. It has spawned multinational corporations which have managed to expand into Europe and America, produced cars and aircraft parts for the western markets. The paper shows how South Africa’s role as a major economic player in Africa, advanced process technology, manufacturing capacity and level of industrialization has earned it a place in the BRICS.
