Abstract

Methods employed in research and development (R&D)  to develop technology,  generally follow a  linear model. This is a sequential process whereby fundamental knowledge is developed in research and then used in an applied research domain. The applied research may eventually lead to technology development i.e. the development of new products and services. One of the shortfalls of this model is the lack of consideration given to design engineering and production. This research investigates the processes, methods and tools that are currently used to develop technology as well as the nature of the technology developments to determine if systems engineering methods  and tools can be applied in anR&D environment.  A  case study is presented  based on  the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Project. This is a project in the R&D environment and is the unit of analysis in this research.
