Abstract

In the past 15 years the South African Clothing Industry has been decimated by the import of cheaper Chinese products.  Recently national retailers have started to move towards a Quick Response supply model which requires a robust local and regional supply chain.

This paper discusses the conceptualisation and implementation of a supplier development strategy used by a large retailer to re-build local capacity in the clothing manufacturing sector.  The paper also discusses how the improvement of local suppliers supported its quick response model.
